Adani Total Gas launches green hydrogen blending project

To assess the viability of green hydrogen as an alternative energy source for city gas distribution (CGD) customers, Adani Total Gas Limited (ATGL) on Tuesday announced the launch of its green hydrogen blending project in Ahmedabad. The pilot project will mix green hydrogen with natural gas for at least 4,000 home and commercial PNG customers in the city.

Green hydrogen will be produced using water electrolysis with electricity produced by renewable energy. The hydrogen mixture is less carbon intensive than the burning gas but has the same heating capacity.

The project is expected to be operational by the first quarter of next fiscal year 2025 and the percentage of green hydrogen in the mix will gradually increase to 8% or more depending on regulatory approvals. According to ATGL, the project will improve existing infrastructure, diversify the energy mix, develop hydrogen ecosystems and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 4%. Valid initiatives will be rolled out in other markets.

Suresh P. Monglani, Executive Director and CEO, ATGL, said, “This project will reduce our carbon footprint and by investing in innovative projects like this, we are actively contributing to the evolution of the industry and making progress in sustainable energy solutions. “
