ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has become the first integrated steel producer in the country to receive Green Steel certification under the Ministry of Steel’s newly introduced Green Steel Taxonomy, marking a key milestone in India’s decarbonisation drive. Under the certification, the company’s Hot Rolled (HR) coils and sheets have been awarded a four-star rating, while Cold Rolled (CR) coils and sheets have received a three-star rating.
The certified flat steel products are widely used across automotive, infrastructure, defence, construction equipment and consumer durables sectors. With the certification, these products are officially recognised as government-verified Green Steel, enabling customers to reduce Scope 3 emissions across their supply chains. Eligibility is based on emissions intensity, with steel produced below 2.2 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of finished steel qualifying for star ratings.
Certification followed a detailed audit by the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology, which confirmed that AM/NS India’s flat steel portfolio meets the required benchmarks. The company’s structurally lower-carbon profile is supported by the use of Direct Reduced Iron based on natural gas for around 65% of its capacity, helping achieve over 35% reduction in emissions intensity since 2015. Renewable energy integration, including a 1 GW hybrid project in Andhra Pradesh and upcoming projects across western India, further strengthens this effort.
AM/NS India has now commenced commercial production of certified green steel products and aims to cut emissions intensity by 20% by 2030 compared to the 2021 baseline. In Kolkata, steel traders and industry players said the move is likely to boost demand from infrastructure projects, engineering firms and consumer goods manufacturers, as eastern India increasingly aligns procurement decisions with sustainability and ESG-linked norms.
