North Kolkata’s Sobhabazar Rajbari Natmondir will host a glittering revival of the classic play ‘Debi Chaudhurani’ on August 16 and 17, promising a spectacular showcase of traditional theatre. The production, presented by ‘Sutanuti Pala Parbon,’ will feature three star-studded performances, including an exclusive show for invited guests on August 16 and public showings on August 17 at 3 pm and 6:30 pm.
The press conference announcing the event saw a gathering of renowned figures from both Jatra and theatre. Notable cast members include Smt. Kakali Chowdhury, Sri Anal Chakraborty, Sri Raju Barua, Sri Soumitra Mitra, and Sri Biswajit Sarkar. Also present were Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s MIC, Sri Debashis Kumar, and the creative team behind the production: writer Samrat Mukhopadhyay and director Prantik Chowdhury.
The revival commemorates the birthday week of Kolkata and India’s Independence Week, offering a modern twist on Mahendra Gupta’s adaptation of Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay’s ‘Debi Chaudhurani.’ The production pays tribute to historical narratives and celebrates the legacy of Mahendra Gupta and his contributions to Bengali theatre.Samrat Mukhopadhyay highlighted the play’s importance in preserving and presenting historical resistance, while director Prantik Chowdhury expressed excitement about the exceptional cast and the play’s potential impact. The event, supported by Tech Hoc Solutions and Barrackpore Bratyajon, aims to revitalize North Kolkata’s theatre culture and bring new life to a cherished tradition.
