In response to the recent militant clash at the Assam-Manipur border, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh has provided a detailed update and assured the public of continued security measures to ensure safety in the region. On July 17, 2024, a confrontation occurred on Krishnapur Road in Cachar district under Kachudharam Police Station. Acting on reliable intelligence regarding militant activity, a police team intercepted an autorickshaw carrying three suspects—Lallungawi Hmar (21), Lalbikung Hmar (33), and Joshua (35). The suspects were found with an AK-47 rifle, a single-barrel rifle, a pistol, and live ammunition.
The encounter led to the neutralization of the three militants. DGP Singh highlighted that this operation is part of ongoing efforts to secure Assam, noting, “We will persist in our efforts to secure every corner of Assam. After more than three decades, there have been no fatalities among civilians or security personnel due to militant violence in 2023 and 2024. Our goal is to maintain this record.”
Following the initial clash, suspects revealed the presence of additional militants in Bhuban Hills, leading to a special operation involving ASP HQ, local police, and AG commandos. Despite the militants’ entrenched positions and the police team’s protective gear, the three captured militants sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).
Six to seven militants escaped into the dense forest during the clash. A subsequent search operation recovered another AK-47 rifle, live ammunition, and several empty casings. The area has been secured, and efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the fleeing militants.
