HCG Cancer Centre, Kolkata, has made history by performing Eastern India’s first robotic Whipple (pancreaticoduodenectomy) surgery on a 60-year-old male patient. This groundbreaking procedure reaffirms the center’s status as the sole facility in Eastern India offering both traditional and robotic options for this complex surgery. Led by Dr. Sujoy Kumar Bala, the surgery utilized the advanced da Vinci robotic system, allowing for smaller incisions and enhanced precision.
The patient, who was diagnosed with periampullary cancer following symptoms of anemia and abdominal pain, benefitted from the minimally invasive approach. Dr. Bala highlighted the surgery’s advantages, stating, “The robotic system’s 3D view provided superior accuracy and control, resulting in fewer complications and quicker recovery.” Remarkably, the patient was discharged just eight days post-surgery, a testament to the effectiveness of robotic assistance.
In Kolkata, this advancement signifies a significant leap in cancer care options available to patients. The introduction of robotic surgeries not only enhances treatment outcomes but also positions HCG Cancer Centre as a premier destination for innovative cancer treatment in the region. Prateek Jain, Regional Business Head, emphasized the commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology, enhancing the overall patient experience and recovery.
