The indefinite walkout by seven junior doctors began on Saturday night and entered its fourth day on Wednesday. The ongoing protest by West Bengal physicians over the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case escalated on Wednesday, with more senior doctors at other State-run hospitals resigning and junior doctors intending to march to various puja pandals in Kolkata. Some doctors’ organizations have declared that they will march to the CGO Complex in Salt Lake, where the CBI’s office is situated, to put pressure on the federal agency that is investigating the rape and murder case.

On Tuesday, at least 48 senior doctors and faculty members at the RG Kar Hospital submitted a mass resignation letter. More two other State-run facilities threatened to do the same in support of the junior medics. Junior doctors have been on an indefinite hunger strike since last week, demanding justice for their colleague who was raped and murdered in August. On Wednesday, a large number of doctors at the Medical College Kolkata and the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri resigned.
