IBM and C-DAC join forces to turbocharge India’s high performance computing sector

IBM (NYSE: IBM) and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) have joined hands in a strategic partnership aimed at propelling India to the forefront of the global High Performance Computing (HPC) arena. The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 6th, 2024, heralds a significant milestone in India’s journey towards becoming a powerhouse in processor design and manufacturing for HPC applications.

Under the terms of the MoU, IBM and C-DAC will establish a joint working group dedicated to fostering innovation and skill development in HPC technologies. This collaboration will focus on nurturing India’s burgeoning developer community, with an emphasis on processor design, system architecture, firmware, and application development, including contributions to open-source initiatives.The partnership will see IBM promoting its Power processor for HPC applications across a spectrum of Indian stakeholders, ranging from start-ups and MSMEs to research institutions and academic bodies. By leveraging IBM’s expertise and C-DAC’s technical prowess, the collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of HPC technologies in India, thereby fueling the nation’s digital transformation and economic growth.

Speaking on the collaboration, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Electronics & IT and Jal Shakti, underscored the government’s commitment to positioning India as a global semiconductor hub. Sandip Patel, Managing Director, IBM India & South Asia, expressed confidence in the partnership’s ability to create a conducive ecosystem for nurturing indigenous talent and driving innovation in the HPC space.
