In a latest development, Damoh district in MP (Madhya Pradesh) is on a way to become home to the India’s largest tiger reserve, said a forest department official.
The union govt has issued a notice accepting the proposal to merge the Noradehi Sanctuary with the Durgavati Sanctuary of the Damoh district, which will create a huge tiger reserve extending upto 2,300 sq km.
According to Damoh’s Forest Divisional Officer, MS Uikey, the initiative to create new tiger reserve will provide a safe place for the area’s tiger population, which at present stands to 16. The merger is also expecting to attract more tigers to the area, further improving its conservation value.
The concerned department is working hard on its project to make the new tiger reserve operational within the next 2 to 3 months, the officials said.The establishment is also expecting to attract tourists from abroad as well as India, hence providing an economic and tourism boost to the local communities and the country.
