The Lotha Wrestling Association (LWA) has kicked off its historic 10-day Intensive Wrestling Training Camp, marking a milestone for the sport in Nagaland. The camp, held under the banner of the Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA), began with a Curtain Raiser program at VDB Hall, Wokha Town. NWA President Vivolie Kezo, attending as a special invitee, emphasized the cultural and historical significance of wrestling within the Naga community. “Wrestling has been a traditional sport for generations, serving as a method of conflict resolution and preserving our heritage,” Kezo remarked, highlighting the importance of belt-style wrestling, which is gaining recognition on the international stage.
Kezo further revealed plans for future training camps for other Nagaland communities, including Pochury, Rengma, and Sumi Wrestling Associations. He announced that a state-level Naga Style Wrestling Championship is set for March 2025, encouraging Lotha youths to prepare for this prestigious event. Additionally, Nagaland will introduce its unique style at the Asian Alysh Belt Wrestling Championship in November 2024, where over 20 nations will compete.
LWA President Mharhomo Lotha called on the Lotha community to actively participate in NWA events and stressed the need for technical guidance from the NWA. With 20 wrestlers registered, the camp will be led by top trainers Visevo Zhasümo, Thepukhoyi Swuro, and Hangche-u Zeliang.
