Addressing the growing burden of neurological and respiratory disorders across Eastern India, Manipal Hospital EM Bypass, Kolkata, conducted an interactive medical awareness session was led by Dr. Sunandan Basu, Consultant Neurosurgery, and Dr. Nandini Biswas, Senior Consultant Pulmonology, Manipal Hospital EM Bypass, shared expert insights on evolving disease patterns, the importance of early diagnosis, and recent advances in specialised care. Recent global health estimates, neurological and respiratory disorders account for a significant share of the global disease burden. Stroke affects nearly 15 million people worldwide each year, while chronic respiratory diseases impact over 500 million individuals globally, including rising cases of COPD and asthma. In India, factors such as pollution, ageing populations, and lifestyle changes have led to an increase in brain tumours, spinal disorders, traumatic brain injuries, and chronic lung diseases.
The session highlighted the increasing prevalence of neurological conditions such as brain tumours, spinal disorders, stroke-related complications, and traumatic brain injuries, alongside the rising incidence of respiratory illnesses including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, lung infections, and other pulmonary complications. Experts noted that delayed diagnosis and lack of awareness often lead to advanced disease stages, underscoring the importance of early consultation and timely treatment. They also emphasised that recent advancements in high-resolution neuroimaging, minimally invasive neurosurgery, bronchoscopy, and advanced pulmonary diagnostics that are significantly improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
