Medtronic and I-NK announce a partnership to advance neuromodulation therapies for movement disorders

Global healthcare technology leader Medtronic has partnered with the Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata (I-NK) to strengthen the management and treatment of Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders through advanced neuromodulation therapies. The collaboration aims to support medical professionals with enhanced training, skill development, and exposure to the latest technologies in neuromodulation while also spreading awareness among clinicians and patients about available therapy options. Parkinson’s disease in East India, particularly in Kolkata, has a prevalence of about 45.82 per 100,000 people, with a significant number of early-onset cases occurring before the age of 50. The progressive neurological disorder affects movement, daily functioning and quality of life. Neuromodulation therapies such as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and newer innovations like adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation (aDBS) are increasingly being used for selected patients to improve motor symptoms and enable more personalised treatment approaches.

Medtronic India Managing Director and Vice President Mandeep Singh Kumar said neuromodulation care requires clinical precision along with informed patient engagement. “Through our collaboration with the Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata, we aim to build structured and sustainable clinical capabilities in West Bengal and advance the treatment of Parkinson’s disease for long-term patient benefit,” he said. The Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata, a specialised centre for neurology and neurosurgery, has recently strengthened its capabilities with Microelectrode Recording (MER) technology, which improves precision in neuromodulation procedures, particularly movement disorder surgeries. As a recognised Centre of Excellence, I-NK also contributes to research, training and clinical studies in neuromodulation.

The partnership reflects the growing demand for advanced neurological care in the Kolkata healthcare sector, which is emerging as a major medical hub for eastern and northeastern India. With increasing awareness and improved access to specialised treatment, hospitals in the city are witnessing rising patient inflow for neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s. Industry observers note that collaborations between global medical technology firms and specialised institutions in Kolkata are likely to strengthen the region’s position as a centre for advanced neurological treatment and research.

Dr. Hrishikesh Kumar, Vice Chairman and Head of Neurology and Director of the Movement Disorders Program at I-NK, said greater awareness among clinicians and patients is crucial as neuromodulation becomes an important component of neurological care. He added that the collaboration will promote knowledge-sharing and structured training to support the appropriate adoption of advanced therapies for patients who need them. Doctors Bibhukalyani Das, Jacky Ganguly, Amit Kumar Ghosh, and Supriyo Choudhury also highlighted the importance of developing a Centre of Excellence for neuromodulation in eastern India. With India carrying a high burden of Parkinson’s disease due to its large population, the initiative aims to strengthen clinical capabilities and improve patient outcomes through innovation and collaboration.
