The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has called for increased transparency and inclusivity in the ongoing Naga political discussions. This appeal comes in response to recent criticisms by party leader K Therie, who dismissed a consultative meeting on the Naga political issue as ineffective. In a statement issued today, the NPCC expressed disagreement with Therie’s characterization of the September 12 meeting as a “waste of time.” While the committee acknowledged some concerns raised by Therie, it stressed the need for processes that foster consensus, transparency, and broad participation.
The committee participated in the consultative meeting and has since demanded that the agreements made between the Government of India and the Naga political groups be disclosed to Political Affairs Committee (PAC) members and civil society. This move aims to ensure that all stakeholders can contribute meaningfully to the discussions. Despite not being a direct participant in the Naga talks, the NPCC has expressed its willingness to support the negotiations when requested. The committee urged the Government of India to swiftly implement the agreements with the Naga political groups.
Regarding the suggestion for a new political interlocutor, the committee advised against interpreting this as a complication. Instead, it should be viewed as an opportunity to improve coordination and accountability. On September 16, Therie had criticized the opposition-less People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA)-led government for neglecting the realities of the Naga political issue. He likened Nagaland’s leaders to Biblical figures betraying their people, implying they are swayed by external pressures and personal ambitions.
