NSF opposes AFSPA extension in Nagaland

The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has voiced strong opposition to the recent extension of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in eight districts of Nagaland. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced a six-month extension covering Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, and Peren, along with areas under 21 police stations across five other districts.

Terming the extension a “unilateral decision,” the NSF accused the Government of India of disregarding the long-standing demand for the repeal of AFSPA. “AFSPA has been a tool of oppression, undermining human rights and perpetuating fear in Naga society for decades,” said an NSF spokesperson.

The federation condemned the timing of the extension, pointing out that it comes amid ongoing peace dialogues. NSF leaders criticized the lack of consultation with Naga civil society and questioned the government’s sincerity in pursuing genuine reconciliation with the Naga people.

The NSF has reiterated its demand for the immediate repeal of AFSPA, warning that its continued enforcement only deepens the alienation of the Naga people. The federation plans to escalate protests and has called on Naga citizens and civil society groups to unite against the Act.
