Prime accused in Dhing gang rape case dies attempting to flee from police custody

Tafazul Islam, the prime suspect in the Dhing gang rape case, was declared dead on Saturday after a failed escape attempt while in police custody. The incident occurred during an investigation at the crime scene. Islam, who was apprehended on August 23, was being escorted by police to the site where the brutal gang rape of a 14-year-old girl occurred when he attempted to escape by jumping into a nearby pond at around 4 am. Despite a two-hour search, his body was later recovered from the water.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Nagaon Swapnaneel Deka confirmed the details, stating, “When the police team took him to the location for investigation, the accused tried to flee and jumped into a pond nearby.” Islam was identified as one of three men involved in the heinous crime, which took place on Thursday evening. The minor girl was attacked by the assailants on a motorcycle as she returned home from tuition and was found critically injured near a pond.

Local residents, who discovered the girl in a semi-conscious state, alerted the police. A manhunt is underway to capture the two remaining suspects who are still at large. The victim is receiving medical care in Nagaon, with a team of doctors and psychiatrists providing treatment and counseling.
