Protests erupt in Manipur, clashes and violence reported

Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) K Kabib addressed the media on September 11, stating that Manipur has witnessed a series of protests over the past 24 hours across multiple districts, with the state police working relentlessly to maintain law and order amid growing tensions.

While protests in Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Imphal West were mostly peaceful, violence erupted in certain areas. In Imphal West, under the jurisdiction of Singamari and City Police Stations, clashes turned hostile. Protesters in Kakwa Bazar reportedly used firearms, while in Uripok, petrol bombs were deployed, intensifying the situation.

More than ten police personnel, including a member of the Village Defense Force (VDF), were injured during the confrontations. Law enforcement was forced to use tear gas to disperse the violent crowds, resulting in injuries on both sides. IGP Kabib expressed concern over the involvement of students in violent protests and confirmed that several instigators detained during the unrest were not locals, pointing to potential external interference aimed at destabilizing the region.
