Ranchi Hospital restores mobility for Patna patient through complex two-stage hip surgery

Bhagwan Mahavir Manipal Hospitals, Ranchi, successfully restored mobility to a 32-year-old Patna resident, Kumar Vivek, through a rare and highly complex two-stage acetabular (hip socket) reconstruction. Dr. Rakesh Agarwal, Senior Consultant – Orthopaedics, led the surgical team in a carefully planned procedure addressing a severe hip fracture sustained in a road traffic accident.

The first stage, performed on 3 August, involved an intrapelvic approach to stabilize the front of the hip socket. Two days later, a posterior approach allowed the team to reconstruct the posterior wall and column of the acetabulum, ensuring complete fixation. The surgery preserved strong bone stock, enabling potential future total hip replacement if complications like avascular necrosis or arthritis arise. Vivek was discharged on 9 August and has regained the ability to stand and walk short distances under guided rehabilitation.

Speaking about the surgery, Dr. Agarwal said, “Our aim was to give this young patient the best chance at a pain-free, active life, safeguarding his future mobility.” Vivek expressed gratitude, noting that the hospital’s care and rehabilitation are helping him regain confidence in daily activities. The successful surgery highlights the city’s growing prominence as a hub for advanced orthopaedic care. With state-of-the-art facilities and skilled surgeons, Bhagwan Mahavir Manipal Hospitals continues to attract patients from neighbouring states like Bihar, boosting medical tourism and confidence in local healthcare services.
