Road between Jotsoma and Khonoma closed after massive landslide

A massive landslide occurred on Friday morning, blocking the NEC road between Jotsoma and Khonoma near the Dzüna bridge, the largest stream between the two villages. The landslide, which likely occurred late Thursday night or early Friday, has rendered the road impassable, with debris covering the entire stretch.

SDO (Civil) Sechü-Zubza confirmed that the road is completely blocked, and the only alternate route to Khonoma is currently via Mezoma village, which is also being used as a route to Dimapur. The Border Roads Organisation (GREF) is responsible for the road’s maintenance and has begun restoration work.

Kuolachalie Seyie, a resident of Khonoma, indicated that it may take two to three days to clear the road due to continuous sliding of loose soil, which is hampering the restoration efforts. The road, constructed with North Eastern Council (NEC) funds, connects to Benreu in Peren district. Kohima Police PRO Relo Aye confirmed that there have been no casualties or damage to manmade structures. Police are closely monitoring the situation as restoration work continues.
