SBI General Insurance, one of India’s leading general insurers, has undertaken a significant initiative to enhance access to eye care services in the rural areas of Meghalaya. As part of this initiative, SBI General Insurance has donated a patient transport bus and is supporting 28 community eye check-up camps across the state. This initiative aims to benefit approximately 2,000 patients, helping to bridge the gap in healthcare accessibility for residents in remote regions.
To address this, SBI General Insurance has joined hands with Mission for Vision and its partner, Society for Promotion of Eye Care and Sight (SPECS), to launch a patient transport bus that ensures patients from various remote communities can reach SPECS’ eye hospital in Shillong for further treatment.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Rathin Lahiri, Head of Brand Marketing & CSR, SBI General Insurance, said, “About 20% of Indians suffer from poor eye sight, according to a study. Access to healthcare is a fundamental right, not a privilege.” Ms. Elizabeth Kurian, Chief Executive Officer, Mission for Vision, remarked, “Transportation in the rugged terrains of Meghalaya remains a major obstacle, severely limiting access to essential eye care services.”
