The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) and Smile Train, the world’s largest cleft-focused NGO, inaugurated the Meghalaya Smiles Campaign today, drawing the active participation of over 2000 students at the USTM campus in 9th Mile, Khanapara. The pioneering initiative aims to raise awareness about clefts and generate funds to support cleft treatment in Meghalaya.
Shri Mahbubul Hoque, Founder Chancellor of USTM, emphasized the university’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, “USTM truly stands out as an inclusive and supportive community.” He commended Smile Train for its humanitarian service, expressing hope that the campaign would raise substantial awareness. Anjali Katoch, Head of Communications and Business Development at Smile Train India, lauded the potential of engaging with USTM students in fostering community understanding and garnering support for free surgeries. “Ensuring that children with clefts receive safe, timely, and quality treatment is a core focus for Smile Train,” she emphasized.
Dr Werlock Kharshiing, Smile Train Partner Surgeon and Chairman of Woodland Hospital, Shillong, shared insights into the longstanding 17-year partnership. The campaign, featuring activities like quizzes, games, Phawar performances, a flash mob, and the screening of ‘Smile Pinki,’ raised awareness and launched a fundraising drive to support Smile Train’s cause. With over 35,000 children born with clefts in India each year, the Meghalaya Smiles Campaign strives to eliminate barriers to life-transforming surgeries, offering hope for a brighter future for those affected.
