Tamil Nadu Shocker: Woman Allegedly Held Hostage by Private Bank Over Rs 770 Unpaid Loan Installment in Salem

A shocking incident took place in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district when a branch of a private bank allegedly held a woman captive on Wednesday(1, May) after her husband failed to pay a loan installment.

The woman was eventually let go after her husband paid the loan installment of Rs 770.

He borrowed Rs 35,000 

According to employees of the branch, the man identified as Selvam (name changed) a daily wager who lives in  Dukiyambalayam, next to Vazhappadi in Salem district had been provided a loan of Rs 35,000 with a weekly installment of Rupees 770 for 52 weeks. He is said to have asked for the loan due to a severe financial crisis in his house.

The woman was confined to the bank

In this case, he failed to pay the installment for this week. Suba, a bank employee, went to his house to make collection of the installment amount yesterday(1, May). As he was not at home at that time, his wife was taken to the bank and was kept there until the loan was paid. Then the bank employee called her husband through his wife and told him that his wife was has been held captive at the bank branch and the bank employee said he could pay the installment for this week and take his wife back home.

He paid installment in the presence of policeman

After getting the call, he rushed to the bank and he was said categorically by the bank that they would not release his wife unless he pay the installment of this week. Subsequently, he filed a complaint to the police station nearby, paid the week’s installment amount of Rs.770 to the bank in the presence of a policeman, and released his wife from being captivated.

The customers and the public strongly criticized such an outrageous act performed by the private bank and the incident has raised questions about the actions of the branch and the treatment of borrowers in financial institutions.
