The Watershed Yatra reached Ganchikalak Secondary School

At Ganchikalak Secondary School, the Watershed Yatra—a national campaign supporting sustainable watershed management—engaged teachers and students in a number of hands-on environmental conservation activities. MLA of 59 Chokpot LAC, Sengchim N. Sangma, who is also the MDC of Chokpot GHADC, was the Chief Guest at the program’s opening ceremony. Former MDC Willy D. Shira, Wennison Ch. Marak, Shri Pittingson R. Marak (ADC, South Garo Hills), Chokpot Civil Sub-Division SDO, Dr. Merril N. Sangma (GHEPS President), K. C. Momin (GHEPS Advisor), John Oswin S. Momin (Divisional Soil & Water Conservation, Baghmara South Garo Hills), as well as Nokmas, Sordars, teachers, and students were present at the event.

Students learned about sustainable resource management and watershed conservation through interactive sessions at the event. The audience was also enthralled by a little skit that focused on the importance of watershed management for sustainable livelihoods and environmental protection. The “Importance of Natural Resource Management” theme of a number of contests, such as essay writing, painting, and sketching, inspired pupils to share their thoughts on conservation.

A tree plantation drive was held to raise awareness of the topic. Staff, students, and dignitaries planted saplings to help spread the word about environmental sustainability. The Watershed Yatra is dedicated to improving rural livelihoods, supporting community-led sustainable watershed management techniques, and promoting a more robust ecosystem. In order to ensure long-term sustainability, the program aims to enable communities to take ownership of their natural resources through education and active involvement.
