Veg thali prices gain 11% in July: Crisil

This was mainly due to the impact of high temperatures on the summer crop in major states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
Chris MI&A Research said prices of representative home-cooked vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis increased by 11 per cent and 6 per cent, respectively, on a month-on-month basis in July 2024.
Crisil said 7 per cent of the 11 per cent increase in the price of vegetarian thali could be attributed only to tomato prices, which have increased by 55 per cent from Rs 42 per kg in June to Rs 66 per kg in July. , this was mainly due to the impact of high temperatures on summer crop in key states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
Additionally, sporadic rainfall in May in Karnataka increased whitefly infestation, affecting crop production.
The price of a veg thali plate increased from Rs 29.4 in June to Rs 32.6 in July and the price of a non-veg thali plate increased from Rs 58 to Rs 61.4. Crisil said onion and potato prices increased by 20 percent and 16 percent respectively month-on-month, further inflation the cost of the vegetarian thali. It said that while low Rabi production affected onion prices, late blight infection in Punjab, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh affected potato production.
A vegetarian thali consists of roti, vegetables (onion, potato and tomato ), rice, dal, salad and curd. For the non-veg thali, the ingredients remain the same but for the dal, which is replaced with chicken.
