Yashoda Hospitals, Hitec City, has successfully treated a complex and long-standing case of Type 1 Achalasia with Sigmoid Esophagus using the advanced POEM (Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy) procedure, restoring quality of life for a 42-year-old patient, Mr. Chand Mia from Assam. Mr. Chand Mia had been suffering from severe difficulty in swallowing both solids and liquids for nearly 10 years, along with chest pain, nocturnal regurgitation, and chronic cough. Multiple evaluations outside revealed a grossly dilated esophagus with food retention, but definitive treatment remained elusive. With worsening symptoms over the last six months, he was referred to Yashoda Hospitals for expert care.

After comprehensive evaluation, the patient underwent a successful POEM procedure on 21 October 2025, performed by the expert gastroenterology team led by Dr. K. S. Somasekhar Rao, Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist, along with Dr. Naveen Polavarapu, Senior Consultant Liver Specialist & Gastroenterologist. Speaking about the case, Dr. K. S. Somasekhar Rao said, “Achalasia is a rare esophageal motility disorder, and in advanced cases with a sigmoid-shaped esophagus, treatment becomes highly challenging. POEM is a minimally invasive, highly effective procedure that offers excellent long-term outcomes.” Mr. Chand Mia is currently recovering well and has shown marked improvement in swallowing and overall symptoms. Yashoda Hospitals continues to lead in advanced therapeutic endoscopy and minimally invasive gastrointestinal procedures, offering world-class care to patients from across India.
